Sexual Rights series: The right to be seen
The fifth sexual right is the right to be seen.
The right to be seen means that everyone has the right to be seen and heard exactly as they are, regardless of factors such as an individual’s external characteristics, sexual orientation, background or age. Everyone has the right to express their sexuality, gender, sexual orientation as they wish.
The right to be seen also covers the right to express one’s own opinions. However, the right to express an opinion does not justify insulting or hurting another person.
Society consists of different types of people, and we all have the right to be exactly who we are. A key part of implementing human well-being is that everyone is accepted and seen as their unique self. This sexual right aims to ensure such things as everyone being able to dress and express themselves as they wish. Everyone has the right to be protected from sexual and gender-based discrimination, harassment and violence.
